Pension Application for Adam Brown

            Personally appeared before me the undersigned a Justice of the peace of the County of Montgomery Adam Brown mentioned in the annexed declaration & who signed & swore to the service who being duly sworn deposeth & saith that in consideration to the times of service particularly mentioned in the said declaration he recollects that a title before the captain of Burgoyne he started with a part of his company to oppose the army of that General but got no farther and Albany, about sixty miles from home when he was sent home in consequence of the news of its capture & he was about a week out at this time applicant further saith that by reason of old age & consequence of loss of memory he cannot swear positively as to the precise length of his services but according to the best of his recollection he served not less than the periods mentioned below & in the following grade—for two years I served as a Sergeant in the militia of the state of New York and for such services I claim a pension –I further state that I am acquainted with Phineas Randall Esquire, Jacob Ehle, Nicholas Van Alstine.  The men J. Ehle & John Roof of the town of Canajoharie in said County to whom reference may be had of witness in relation to my character.  (Signed with his mark)  Adam Brown.

            On this nineteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two personally appeared in open court before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in & for the County of Montgomery aforesaid now sitting Adam Brown a resident of the town of Canajoharie in said County of Montgomery, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
            That he is eighty four years on the 14th day of last March as he has learnt & believes to be [?] from a written record of it kept at an early day by his father but now lost as [?] believes—That applicant was born in Germany & came when he was six years old in 1752 with his fathers family to America & immediately settled in the said town of Canajoharie when he has resided ever since.  That at the commencement of the Revolutionary war applicant was a sergeant in the company of Captain Van Every in said town & in which company Cornelius Van Every was Lieutenant & where Van Every second Lieutenant—Applicant is not able to state all the actual service he performed during the Revolutionary war but verily believes it far exceeds two years—He recollects however that among those servicing the following were a part to wit: he was drafted to go to Fort Stanwix and thinks he was engaged in this service upwards of two weeks during which time he was a day or two engaged in chopping timber in too wood creek & upon its banks to obstruct the passage of the enemy—he was a fortnight or more at Fort Eaton at the German Flats, Captain McKeen had the command of the fort at that time—he was stationed a dozen times or more from one to 10 days at Fort Plank—Spent at least 5 or 6 weeks at different times in guarding the fort at Cherry Valley—He was three summer stationed in a Picket fort in Canajoharie called Fort Ehle—This fort sometimes was guarded partly by continental troops & sometimes entirely by Militia.  During the time he was stationed at Fort Ehle as aforesaid he took his regular time in keeping guard Captain Van Every & Lieutenant Van Every generally commanded the last mentioned fort during from this season—Applicant was pressed to go to Fort George to carry provisions for the army & was out on that expedition upwards of a week—Applicant was out on a scouting party to Schoharie & to Turlock—Applicant never rec’d any pay for his services in going with provisions to Fort George on contract to receive any – applicant also states he was in the Johnstown battle under command of Colonel Willett who lost a field piece which applicant & his comrades retook from the enemy for which he states they got great praise—It was at the time mentioned as this new taking—Her hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.  (Signed with his mark)  Adam Brown
