Pension Application for Eli Calkin

            On the sixteenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen, before me the subscriber one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in & for the County & State aforesaid, personally appeared Eli Calkins aged fifty seven years & three months resident in the town of Queensbury in the County & State aforesaid, who being by me first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the late act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war.”
            That he the said Eli Calkin enlisted in Frederickstown in the County of Dutchess & State aforesaid in the company commanded by Captain William Mott in Colonel Swartouts Regiment & General Clinton’s Brigade of the New York Line in the month of August in the year seventeen hundred & seventy six for five months.  That this deponent served said term of time & obtained an honorable discharge, that in the month of April in the year seventeen hundred & seventy nine, this deponent again enlisted into a company commanded by Captain Anthony Post in the Regiment commanded by Colonel John Lamb of the Artillery and General Knox’s Brigade of the New York Line at the town, county & state, last aforesaid for the term of one year that some time in the latter part of the month of January following the last time of inlistment while in the service of the United States this deponent froze his feet so as to render him unable to do duty, but that this deponent hired a substitute by the name of William Maxwell who served the United States for this deponent until the term of one year as last aforesaid was fully completed and ended, that said Maxwell was paid by the father of this deponent for his said services as substitute for this deponent as aforesaid—That this deponent was discharged from service in April seventeen hundred & eighty in the state aforesaid, that in the month & year last aforesaid this deponent at the town, county and state last aforesaid again enlisted into a company commanded by Daniel Williams & Colonel Harper’s Regiment as this deponent believes, in the New York line for the term of nine months, that in the month of July following this deponent was transferred into the fourth Regiment & into a company commanded by Captain Nathaniel Norton in General Clinton’s Brigade from which this deponent was discharged from service in the state aforesaid in the month of November in the year last aforesaid.  That this deponent was in the Battle at White Plains when the Court House was burnt in the year 1776 and that he is in reduced circumstances & stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services—(Signed) Eli Calkin

            His wife Sally applied for his pension 23 March 1853 in the County of Erie Pennsylvania.  She stated she was a resident of North East and was 78 years of age.  In about the year 1818 she married Calkin at the house of Nathaniel Pope in the town of Queensbury, Washington County, NY; by James Vaughn a Justice of the Peace.  Her husband died in the town of Wallingford, County of Rutland, State of Vermont on the 17th September 1844.
