Pension Application for Anthony Ehle

On this
19th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and thirty two personally appeared in open court before the Judges of the Court
of common Pleas in and for the County of Montgomery aforesaid now setting
Anthony Ehle, a resident of the Town of Canajoharie in the County of Montgomery
aforesaid aged 69 years last November who being first duly sworn according
to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the
benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 to wit:
That he
was born in the Town of Canajoharie in said County of Montgomery on the twelfth
day of November in the year 1762 and is now in his seventieth year and has
resided in said town ever since—That as soon as he was of sufficient
age he was enrolled into the Militia Company of Captain Renier VanEverat & continued
a member of said company during the remainder of said war—That after
the was enlisted as aforesaid he was often called into the actual service of
his country of which he is now able to give a detail of only the following
items to wit: He was several times called out to keep guard at Fort Plank & at
Fort Plain where the length of their tour was generally eight days. He
was stationed for three successive occasions at a Picket Fort in Canajoharie
called Fort Ehle where declarant believes he did faithfully service as a soldier
for the term at least one year during that time and declarant verily believes
that the time spent in this aforesaid service and in such as this declarant
is not at this length of time, able distinctly to recollect could not fall
short of eighteen months—applicant further saith that [blotted] record
of his age in possession of his brother Jacob Ehle in said Town of Canajoharie—Ye
hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the
present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency
of any state.

Alstine, Adam Brown & John Roof on this nineteenth day of September 1832,
being duly sworn before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of the County
of Montgomery aforesaid in open court now sitting……..depose and
say that they have during and ever since the Revolutionary War been intimately
acquainted with Anthony Ehle whose services in the Revolutionary War are set
forth in the foregoing declaration signed by him that they are personally knowing
to the said Anthony having done services in the revolution & especially
in guarding Fort Ehle and from their knowledge of the character of the said
Anthony Ehle for truth and veracity & of the history of the times in which
said services were done they verily believe that such particulars set forth
in said declaration are correct and that the estimate of the general amount
of services contained in said declaration is also correct & further that
we agree with him in relation to his age.

Personally
appeared before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace of the Town of Canajoharie
in the County of Montgomery aforesaid, Anthony Ehle who signed and swore to
the amended declaration who being duly sworn deposeth & saith that by reason
of old age and consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively as to the
previous length of his services but according to the best of his recollection
he served not less than the period mentioned below and in the following grade—For
one year and six months I served as a private soldier in the Militia of the
State of New York and for such service I claim a pension. Deponent further
saith that the following to wit: David F. Saisa, Thomas B. Michell, David Spraker,
Charles McVean esquire, Henry Lieber, Herman I Ehle, Nichoals Van Alstine & Phineas
Randell esquire are amongst other respectable inhabitants of the aforesaid
Town of Canajoharie acquaintances of said deponent.

On
this 27th day of December AD 1850 personally appeared before me a County Judge
of Montgomery County. Mrs. Angelica Ehle who being sworn according
to law doth declare and say that she is the widow of Anthony Ehle deceased
who is the identical Anthony Ehle who was a private under Capt. Renier VanEverat
in Colonel Samuel Clyde’s Regiment of N.Y. Militia in the Revolutionary
War between the Untied States and Great Britain during the years 1777, 1779 & 1780;
and deponent further declares and says that her late husband entered the
service at Canajoharie, Montgomery County, State of New York for the time
as aforesaid and that he was honourably discharged at Montgomery County,
State of New York by reason of expiration of service and deponent further
declares that her husband Anthony Ehle was married to her by the Rev’d
Mr. Gross of Canajoharie, Montgomery County, State of New York on or about
the month of August AD 1780 and that her maiden name before marriage was
Angelica Stears—deponent further declares and says that for the proof
of the same she exhibits the affidavits and copy of the family record of
her marriage. She further states that her husband Anthony Ehle died
July 20th 1838. Deponent further states that her late husband never
received a pension previous to his death and that she has never received
a pension for her late husband Anthony Ehle.
