Pension Application for John Fonda

On this eighteenth
day of September 1837, personally appeared before the Hon. A. Morrell first Judge
of Montgomery County Courts Angelica Fonda, a resident of the Town of Johnstown
County and State aforesaid, aged eighty seven years the twenty third day of January
last past, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath make
the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision, made
by the act of Congress passed July 4th 1836: That she is the widow of John Fonda
who was a Captain before the War of the Revolution, but during the said War did
not act as captain, and in the early part of it was enrolled in Captain Yelles
or Giles Fonda’s Company of Associated Exempts and that he did not always
serve in said Company but in various other companies as occasion required—That
he was in the battle of Oriskany, she positively knows and also in the early
part of said War he was sworn in and served as a Committee man during the whole
of said war. That the said John Fonda was engaged in said War as a
Private of Committee man but the particular services he rendered and the
times of said services she cannot particularly set forth.
She further
declares that she was married to the said John Fonda sometime in February, in
the year seventeen hundred and sixty nine, the particular day she cannot set
forth. That her husband the aforesaid John Fonda, died on the fourteenth
day of February eighteen hundred and thirteen, and further that she does not
know of any documentary evidence in ;support of her claim and that the book containing
the record of her marriage, she has been informed and so believes were destroyed
at the time the church near Fort Plain was burned in 1780 that she has remained
a widow ever since the death of her husband, and for further particulars of the
facts set forth in the above declaration reference is had to the proof hereto
annexed as will hereby more fully appear—This Deponent further says that
she never learned to write and therefore makes her mark. (Signed with her

Monell First Judge of the County Courts of the County of Montgomery in said
State(said courts being courts of record in same county) do hereby certify
that Angelica Fonda personally know to me, appeared before me and took and
subscribed the foregoing oath or declaration in above form of case on the 18th
day of September A. D. 1837 at Johnstown in said county that she is unable
to attend court from bodily infirmity, that I am well acquainted with her & have
been for twenty years last past and [?] that she is a credible person and that
her declaration or statement [?] as above made is entitled to credit that the
[can’t read the rest of the judge’s terrible writing.]
