Pension Application for Nowell Furman

According to someone asking for information about Furman, he was born in 1751, died Portage Co., Ohio 1833.  He was the son of Nowell Furman, born 1702, and married Susannah Tulis 1738.

At & before the Supreme Court of Said State.
            On this 27th day of July personally appeared in open Court before the Supreme Court of the State of Ohio, at Norwalk within & for said County, now sitting Nowell Furman a resident of Florence in the county of Huron and State aforesaid, aged eighty one years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.  That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated to wit.  That in the year 1776, he enlisted for three years in the Continental Army of the Revolutionary War as a private soldier & was appointed an Orderly Sergeant in Capt. VanSchaick’s, Colonel Lewis Dubois regiment, that he served on year &b six months and then hired a substitute for the remainder of the time that he served in Fort Montgomery until a few days before it was taken by the British [Oct 6, 1777], he arrived in New York the day the American Troops retreated from Long Island he with the American Army then went to Kingsbridge went from the entire [?] marched from there to the White Plains where a Battle took place in which he himself was engaged but was taken sick before the battle & returned the day after said Battle – marched from White Plains to Peekskill, then went into winter quarters—after this he was furloughed & went home, returned in the Spring of AD 177[?] to Fort Montgomery & joined his Regiment & assisted in building said Fort—Where he knew Capt. John Brooks the whole of that summer, he then hired a substitute who served in his stead for the remainder of said three years—that he actually served himself for two years.  That he knows of no person now living who can testify respecting his aforesaid service excepting John Brooks now of Florence.
            He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency of any state.  (Signed) Nowell Furman

Letter dated February 1, 1938, responding to a request for information.
            You are furnished herein the record of the only soldier named Nowell Furman found in the Revolutionary War records of this office.  The data therein were obtained from pension claim, S.18412, based upon his service in the Revolution.   
            The date and place of birth and names of the parents of Nowell Furman are not shown.
            Nowell Furman enlisted sometime in 1776, place not stated, was appointed orderly sergeant and served as such in Captain VanBenschoten’s company, Colonel Lewis DuBois’ New York regiment, was stationed at Fort Montgomery until a few days before it was taken by the British, marched to various places and finally went into winter quarters at Peekskill, after which he was furloughed and returned home but rejoined his regiment in the spring of 1777 at Fort Montgomery where he assisted in building that fort, and was discharged after having served one year six months or two years.
            Nowell Furman was allowed pension on his application executed July 27, 1832, at which time he was aged eighty-one years and a resident of Florence, Huron County, Ohio.
            No family data are shown in the claim.
