Pension Application for George Hickey

On the nineteenth
day of June 1837 personally appeared before me David F. Lacia one of the Judges
of the Montgomery County Courts, Catharine Hickey a resident of the town of Canajoharie
in the county of Montgomery aforesaid and State aforesaid aged Eighty three years
who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following
declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of
Congress passed July 4th 1836 and the papers annexed hereto—that she is
the widow of George Hickey who was a private soldier in the army of the Revolution. That
her said husband did render service to the United States in said Revolution as
a private soldier for considerable portion of said war the particulars of which
she now unable to state but she relies upon the evidence hereunto annexed together
with such evidence as may appear form the rolls on file in the war office to
prove the service actually rendered—She further declares that she was married
to the said George Hickey about one year before the commencement of the said
Revolutionary War by the Rev’d Mr. Gross at a place called Bowman’s
Creek now in the Town of Canajoharie in the County of Montgomery aforesaid but
the precise day she does not remember—That he husband the said George Hickey
died on 12th February 1821—and that she has remained a widow ever since
that period and as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereunto
annexed.

And I do certify
that she the said Catharine cannot attend court to make her declaration by reason
of bodily infirmity—and that I know her personally & that she is reputable
and entitled to full credit and that she made her mark because she could not
write—June 19, 1837

Jacob Hickey
of the Town of Eagle in said county being duly sworn deposeth & saith
that Catharine Hickey is now living & resides with this deponent in said
town of Eagle in Said County & is in her ninety ninth year according
to this deponents best recollections & belief and that deponent is the
son of said Catharine Hickey who is the widow of George Hickey & was all
formerly residents of the Town of Canajoharie County of Montgomery & States
aforesaid & that this deponent is now sixty three years of age, & further
deponent says not.

Lucia of Canajoharie Montgomery County & State aforesaid being duly sworn
says that his is acquainted with Mrs. Catharine Hickey the widow of George
Hickey. & that he saw the said Catharine Hickey on the 17th day of
July instant at the residence of her son Jacob Hickey in the Town of Eagle
in said County of Wyoming & conversed with her upon the subject of procuring
her pension, that she informed deponent that she was in her ninety ninth year,
that she is not confined to her [page ends here]

Elizabeth
Cradle of the town of Stark in the County of Herkimer in said state being duly
sworn says that she is a sister to Catharine Hickey an applicant for a pension,
that this deponent will be seventy nine years on the 24th day of February next—That
this deponent was present at the marriage of the said Catharine to George Hickey—that
said marriage took place at Bowmans Creek in the now town of Canajoharie in
the County of Montgomery at the house of John Hickey who was the father of
said Geroge Hickey—that this deponent knows the fact distinctly that
said marriage took place before the Revolutionary War and she verily believes
it was one or two years before the commencement of the Revolutionary War—and
this deponent further says that after said marriage which was performed by
the Rev’d Wm. Gros the said George Hickey & the said Catharine had
one child born by the name of Elizabeth who died whilst a child and that said
child was born before the said Revolutionary War--& that this deponent
stood as godmother at the christening of the said child, and this deponent
further says that said Catharine Hickey is some years older than this deponent
but how many she does not remember—now can this deponent state the day& year
when said Catharine & said Hickey got married as there was no record kept
of the same in the Family which this deponent knows to be a fact and this deponent
further says that she thinks deponent was not married until one or two years
after the said Catharine & that this deponent hears of no war until after
she was married--& further this deponent said that she this deponent further
saith that after her marriage & nearly two years after she had a child
what she called Caty & that said child was murdered by the Indians during
said Revolutionary War at the time she was murdered nearly five years old. Further
this deponent saith not.
