Pension Application for Samuel Johnson

W.16619 (Widow: Elizabeth.  Maiden name Field.  Married Samuel September 3d 1768, married by Simon Horton, pastor of Presbyterian Church Newtown, L.I, N.Y.)
Enlisted as a gunner 1 April ’77, as a bombardier 1 May ’78, in the Company commanded by Captain Lockwood, Regmt. Commanded by Col. Lamb.  13 months Gunner, 11 months Bombardier.
July 19, 1839, Elsie Husted, one of the children of Elizabeth Johnson made claim for the remaining unclaimed pension to the amount of one hundred six dollars and twenty five cents to cover the period of 4th of March 1831, to the 5th December 1837, the day of her father’s death. [Other places the date of death is given as June 16, 1821.]

            On this 17 day of July in the year 1837, personally appeared before me, Ebenezer Smith one of the Judges of Cayuga County Elizabeth Johnson, a resident of the town Genoa, Cayuga County and State of New York, aged 85 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed July 4, 1836, that she is the widow of Samuel Johnson, who was a private soldier in the Revolution[ary] War, who inlisted in the United States service according to deponant’s best recollection, about the first of September in the year 1775, and served through the Revolutionary War, deponent thinks and believes that said Samuel Johnson was discharged in the Spring of the year 1783, deponant’s husband Samuel Johnson served under Capt. Samuel Lockwood, and in General Lamb’s Regiment of Artillery, said Samuel Johnson entered the service in the town of Newtown, County of Queens, State of New York, Deponent has always understood it from Samuel Johnson and others that he was in a Battle at Ticonderoga and marched through the State of New York, and she further states that she was married to the said Samuel Johnson on the 3d day of September in the year 1768, that her husband the aforesaid Samuel Johnson died on the 10th day of June in the year 1821, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed.  (Signed)  Elizabeth Johnson.

            Israel Head of the town of Genoa Cayuga County and state of New York, being sworn deposes and says that he is acquainted with Elizabeth Johnson and was acquainted with Elizabeth Johnson and was acquainted with Samuel Johnson the husband of said Elizabeth Johnson, in the Revolutionary War, deponent served in the United States Service in the year 1778, according to deponant’s best recollection, and deponent frequently saw the said Samuel Johnson doing duty in the United States service during said year, and deponent further states that the said Sam’l Johnson served under Col. Jabez Fitch, and deponent further says that he was in a Battle with the said Samuel Johnson on the American side at Forgepoint said Samuel Johnson marched through the State of New York.  (Signed)n Israel Mead.

            Henry Stuart of the town of Groton Tompkins County being duly sworn deposes and says that he was well acquainted with Samuel Johnson, the husband of Elizabeth Johnson, in the year 1781, and according to deponants best recollection and belief said Samuel Johnson volunteered in the United States service about the first of January in the year 1781, the said Samuel Johnson acted as a Captain in the Whale Boat service and commanded one of said Whale Boats from the first of January 1781 till the spring of the year 1783, about the middle of March or April and was then regularly discharged—Deponant enlisted in the same, service and very frequently saw the said Samuel Johnson doing duty as a Capt., and commanding one of said Whale Boats in Long Island Sound, and continued to do duty as a Capt. Aboard of one of said Whale Boats till he was discharged in the spring of the year 1783, deponent was at Long Island Sound in the month of August or September in the year 1781 when the said Capt. Samuel Johnson captured one of the British Gun Boats and brought her into Long Island Sound.  And further deponent sayeth not.  (Signed) Henry Stewart
