Pension Application for James Scates

State of New York SS.
            To  the Hon. Richard Ricker Recorder of the City of New York, and one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, called the Mayor’s Court of the City of New York, which is the Court of Record of the State of New York.
            The Declaration under Oath of James Scates formerly a Corporal engaged in the Service of the United States during the Revolutionary War, now a Citizen of the United States and resident of the City and County of New York, respectfully sheweth.
            That the said James Scates, sometime in the month of March in the year one thousand seventeen hundred and seventy seven he enlisted in the service of the United States of America and was under the command of Nathaniel Strong as Captain and Henry B. Livingston as Colonel, that he enlisted during the war and continued in the service until the end of the war and was regularly discharged.
            And the declaration further sheweth, that the said James Scates is now a citizen of the United States, resides in the city of New York, and is, by reason of his reduced circumstances in life, in need of assistance from his country for support and is nearly sixty one years of age and by the infirmities of old age is rendered unable to support himself and family by his occupation of a Labourer.
            Therefore the said James Scates conceives himself entitled to the benefit of the act of the Congress of the United States, entitled, “An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War,” approved 18th March, 1818, and requests your Honor will examine into the truth of the matter aforesaid, certify and transmit  the testimony in the case, and the proceedings had thereon, to the Honorable the Secretary of the Department of War, to the end that such relief may be had in the premises, as is by law in such case made and provided.  And in support of the facts above set forth, the said James Scates refers to the deposition of Seth Jones undersigned and sworn to, and the certificate of Richard Fish now at the Secretary’s of War Office under the pension claims.
            City and County of New York SS.
            James Scates of the City and County of New York, being duly sworn, saith, that the matters by him set forth in the foregoing Declaration, are in all respects just and true.  James Scates.
            Sworn before me this 31st day of March 1818, R. Riker, Recorder of the City of New York.

State of Ohio
City of Cincinnati SS.
            Before me, Isaac G. Burnet Mayor of the City aforesaid personally appeared, James Scates, who on his solemn oath declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the company commanded by Captain John Francis Haurtranick in the Second Regiment commanded by Col. Philip VanCourtland in the service of the United States; that his name was placed on the Pension roll of the State of New York, from which place he removed to the State of Indiana, from which latter state he removed to the State of Ohio where he now resides and intends to remain and whishes he pension to be there payable in future; and that his reason for removing from the State of Indians was that he might reside with his son who lives in Cincinnati, in the State of Ohio.  (Signed) James Scates
