Pension Application for John Schoolcraft

On this third day of October 1832, personally appeared in open court before the Judges of the court of common Pleas in the county of Schoharie now sitting John Schoolcraft a resident of the town of Schoharie in said county of Schoharie aged 67 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed June 7 th 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated that he the said John Schoolcraft, in the spring in the year 1780 was called into the service by Captain Christian Strubrach [Stubrach] in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Peter Vrooman of the Militia in Schoharie; that he served three months in the lower fort in Schoharie and in fort Dubois at CobelsKill and in that vicinity under the command of Captain Stubrach and Jacob Snyder Lieutenant that he was honorably discharged in the lower fort in Schoharie in the State of New York by Capt. Strubrach by word. That he the said John Schoolcraft, in the spring in the year 1781. Was called again in the Service by Captain Stubrach in the regiment commanded by Colonel Vrooman of the Militia. That he serviced three months in the lower fort in Schoharie and in that vicinity under the command by Captain Stubrach and Jacob Snyder Lieut., that he was discharged in Schoharie in the State of New York by Capt. Stubrach by word that he the said John Schoolcraft enlisted in Schoahrie for the term of nine months on the first April 1782 in the company commanded by Captain Gray in the regiment commanded by Colonel Van Schaick in the Line of the State of New York on the Continental establishment that he served out his term of enlistment faithfully in middle fort in Schoharie and in that vicinity. That he was honorably discharged in the city of Schenectady in the State of New York by Captain Gray by word.

That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the Agency of any State of the United States.

That he was born in Schoharie and lived in Schoharie ever since the American Revolution, he [?] that he was discharged by his officers as he has stated in his declaration. (Signed) John Schoolcraft

Be it known that before me Lyman Baker a Justice of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid duly authorized by Law to administer oaths personally appeared James R. Keyser after being duly sworn deposes and says that he is the present Pastor of the Lutheran Church at Schohaire Court House in said County aforesaid that he has the custody of the Records of the said church and that he finds in searching such Records that in the month of March 1784 Peter Nicholas Somer was Pastor of said Church at the aforesaid place and in the Book of Record for Marriages he says he finds that said Peter Nicholas Somer Recorded in said Book that he married on the 16 th day of March 1784, one Johannes Schoolcraft to Maria Catharine Shell. This deponent further says that he believes the record thus Examined by him to be the Record kept by the said Peter Nicholas Somer and that the same is Entitled to full credit and belief. Sworn and Subscribed this 18 th day of October 1853? before me. Lyman Baker, Justice of the Peace.

A deposition which is in the folder, was made by Jacob Schoolcraft on November 3, 1853, and states his is the only son of John Schoolcraft, aged 69 years. He says that his father died June 18, 1849 and his mother September 11, 1845 in the town of Wright. He states that he and his sister, Elizabeth Shelter are the only surviving heirs of the said John Schoolcraft.
