Pension Application for Zachariah Tufts

            On this fourth day of July 1820 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of sd court, being a court of record for said county, proceeding according to the course of the common law, having a jurisdiction unlimited in point of amount, and keeping a record of its proceedings, Zachariah Tufts aged sixty three years, resident in Keene in said county, who being first duly sworn, doth on his oath declare, that he served in the Revolutionary war as follows: in the year 1775—the first eight months service did duty as a private in Capt. John Wood & company in Col. Gerrick's regiment of Massachusetts line stationed at Bunker Hill—the year 1776 did duty as a private in Capt. Hale's Co. in Col. John Starks regiment N.H. The years 1777, 1778 & 1779 did duty as a private in Capt. Hales company in Col. Morgan's Reg't of riflemen.
            The date of my original declaration in order to obtain a pension in the thirteenth day of May 1818. The number of my pension certificate is 14347.
            And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18 th day of march, 1818: and that I have not, since that time, by gift, sale or in any manner, disposed of my property, or any part thereof, with intent hereby so to diminish it, as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress, entitled “An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary war,” passed on the 18 th day of march 1818, and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me, any property or securities, contracts, or debts, due to me; nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed, and by me subscribed.
            A farmer by occupation – and enjoy as good health as any man of my age—and unable now to labor—my family consists of four in number including myself—my wife Mary aged 55 years and two children, who are dependent on me for support—one daughter named Abigail 15 years – a son named Caleb aged 13 years – both of whom are as healthy & as capable as children generally are of their age.             Sworn to and declared at Keene in said County, on the fourth day of July 1890 before R. Nose, Judge of said Court.
            I Salma Hale, Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas, for the County of Cheshire, do hereby certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule thereto annexed, are truly copied from the record of the said Court; and I do further certify, that it is the opinion of the said Court that the total amount in value of the property in the aforesaid schedule, is twenty four collard and fifty cents.

            On this thirteenth day of May 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, for said County, personally appears Zachariah Tufts, aged sixty two years, resident in Keene in the said County, who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war:” That he the said Zacr. Tufts on the first day of January A.D. 1776 enlisted in Medford, in the state of Massachusetts in the company commanded by Captain Church in the Infantry in the state of the Regiment Commanded by Col. Starks[?] service of the United States in the New Hampshire line for stated term of one year at the end of which time enlisted in Morgan's Corps of Riflemen on the Continental establishment in the revolutionary war, that he continued to serve in the said coprs, or in the service of the United States until the month of Jan of A.D. 1780, when he was discharged from service in Scoharra [Schoharie] state of New York, that he was in the battles of StillWater, Saratoga, Monmouth and in the battle with the Indians under Genl Sullivan, and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services.
